Simchat Torah: Sing, Dance and Celebrate the Gift of Torah

Calendar View

Tuesday October 21, 2008, 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Simchat Torah (literally “rejoicing in the Law”) is a joyous festival.

Celebrate the completion of our annual Torah reading cycle and reaffirm our belief that Torah is a tree of life. Torah scrolls are removed and carried through the chapel in celebration. The concluding portion of Deuteronomy is read immediately followed by the opening portion of Genesis. Simchat Torah is a wonderful celebration for the entire family. Join us for one or more of our holiday services and celebrations. Join family and friends of our kindergarten and first-grade students as they are consecrated, beginning their formal Jewish education and linking themselves to our centuries-old tradition. With the aid of our incredible Warner Murals, students will begin their own Jewish journey from the Creation story and concluding with a blessing before the open ark. Each child will receive his or her own personal Torah to guide their life of learning. Following the ceremony, all the children will gather with all our rabbis, cantor and school directors for a historic photograph on the bimah of our Magnin Sanctuary.

4:00pm: Early Childhood Service and Simchat Torah Art Project
The youngest members of our community will begin our celebration with an exciting holiday project and join Rabbi Ben-Naim, Cantor Gurney and Rabbinic Intern Gersh Lazarow for lively Simchat Torah service and story.

6:00pm: Simchat Torah Family Service and Celebration
Continue the night of celebration with a “Soul Sounds” service as our Rabbis and Cantors honor both the Torah and our congregation with a night of song and dance. During the service we will unwind our entire Torah around the chapel to allow us to complete our annual reading cycle and begin again.

8:00pm: Simchat Torah Israeli Dance Party
Following our Simchat Torah Family Service and Celebration we will continue our night of song and dance as we join David Dassa in our gym for an incredible Israeli dance party.
